Ascent of Tray Mountain on 2008-03-02| Date: | Sunday, March 2, 2008 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Tray Mountain | | Location: | USA-Georgia | | Elevation: | 4430 ft / 1350 m |
Ascent Trip ReportThis is a pretty tough hike. It was warmer than I expected and I ran out of water too early. The return hike back up and over Rocky Mountain was rough. My legs were tired and no water. This trail crosses two forest roads on the way to the summit. So, if you are less inclined to do the 10.8 mile round trip from Unicoi Gap, you can start much closer to the summit. One of the roads even passes maybe a mile or less below the summit.
Unlike many of the Georgia 4000 footers, this one actually has a nice view from the top. Not as nice as Blood Mountain, but there is a rocky slab at the summit that provides views to the SE and to the N. You can see Mount Yonah, Brasstown Bald, and Lake Chatuge.
