Ascent Trip ReportThere are two contours above 720 feet in Alcorn county Mississippi. They are located south of US-72 about 10.7 miles west of Corinth, MS.
The northern point is near the Pine Mountain Lookout Tower on private hunting lands. Take County Rd 608 south from US-72 about 2 miles to a posted, gated and locked dirt road. I was able to pull me car in off the main road and hopped on my bike for the 3/4 mile trek to the high point. The road is in generally good shape and easy to follow from satellite photos, just be sure and bear left for the last bit leading up to the contour from the main road. The contour itself is heavily wooded with one broken down patio chair occupying the high point. How do these things get here?
For the southern point, return to County Rd 608 heading south. Turn left (west) onto MS-354/County Rd 600 and turn right on to gravel County Rd 620. Turn left on to County Rd 622 and then bear right on to County Rd 638. Finally, bear right on to Crum and Mavney Orchard Rd.
I drove down this road until I saw a posted gate for a hunting club that was unlocked. I considered driving down it but this road was not in as good a shape as the one leading to the northern point. So, once again on the mountain bike I went, riding the last 3/4 mile again. The contour itself is much more open than the other one as the road goes right over it. The Crum benchmark was easy to find just of the road near some small pine trees.
