Ascent Trip Report

I have recently developed an interest in claiming Missouri county highpoints whether they are named or not. Before this time I was only interested in ascending named county highpoints. It was disappointing to discover that the Jackson County highpoint is now completely enclosed by a fence with a locked gate from which hangs a sign reading, "Trespassing or Vandalism is an act of Domestic Terrorism and will be reported to the Office of Homeland Security and the FBI for prosecution." I will admit that I have jumped many posted gates and fences in my life during my peakbagging adventures, but this sign intimidated me too much, especially with a busy road next to it and the ease of today's communication with probably every car having a cellular phone available. I decided not to risk the chance that someone might call in my suspicious behavior to the authorities, so I got no farther than the locked gate only 170 yards from the highpoint! I am still highly motivated to bag this highpoint, but not during rush hour traffic with my bright yellow Festiva sitting directly in front of the posted sign on a double locked gate! FOOTNOTE: Upon further study of the topo map for this area, I realized I had mistakenly assumed that the highpoint is enclosed within the posted fenced area. The actual highpoint is located farther east outside of the restricted area, so I hope to travel back here soon and claim this summit before the actual highpoint gets posted too!
