Ascent Trip ReportA group of 3 of us went out last Saturday to bag Stratton, making it my first peak on the AMC NE Hundred Highest, and it was definitely a different kind of hike than I'm used to. We started off at the base of the ski area (~2200') and basically hiked up the course for a mountain race that was going on (we took our time) for the first third of the mountain. Then, based on funny directions by a mountain staff member, we hiked up the ski trails Lower Tamarack to Marks Run to Runaway until we reached the Ursa Express chairlift. Then we hiked across to the mid-mountain lodge and then up Interstate to the Meadows.
From there, it was a straight shot up to the summit of the ski area but had another mile to go on relatively flat ground though a mountain-top bog to get to a fire tower that marked the true summit at 3940'.
The way back down we took a more direct route and went down Black Bear until we met up with Runaway again. In total, a fairly easy hike that took us about 3.5 hours roundtrip.
