Ascent Trip ReportThird time to Brasstown Bald to prove to Karen she had in fact done this highpoint with me some 30 years ago with friends. To make it interesting, however I wanted to claim one of the other 4,000 foot peaks in the area that I had not done. Karen, tired from doing Rabun with my earlier in the day rested in the car while I moved swiftly across the jagged ridge line of the Arkaquah Trail. This is really a nice hike with patches of thick rhododendrons that open out onto a surprising long and narrow ridgeback with nice peek-a-boo vistas and a sense of slope on each side. The spine has some interesting slabs along the way. I found the slab reported in the TR by G. Ringle and it is very near the summit. The bushwhack to the true summit top is easy with no briar but no views either. Tag it and go back to the slab for the best view. The USGS indicates that the rolling terrain of the spine provides for the following ups and downs if you actually touch the tops of the subpeaks along the way:
-263;+160;-100;+220;-180;+140;+23 for a total gain each way of +543 assuming you do take the time to explore each slab top next to the trail. If you stay on trail and only bushwhack the summit i would guess it is more like +500 each way.
Returning to car, Karen joined me for one last summit to go gain the state HP for my third time so we attacked the paved Brastown Bald trail together. This was after a long day of 6 peaks;ending in 4,129 total feet of gain for the day and 11 miles of hiking. Good workout and no issues with a-fib. Karen accompanied me for 9 miles of that and nearly 3,000 feet of that day. The paved trail up Brasstown is steep and good way to end the day.
