Ascent Trip Report

I was a little worried about toting the trailer down another forest service road after just coming from Arvon but since I didn’t really have anywhere I could drop it off I decided I’d shoot for 2 - 2. My GPS tried having me go up the Ski Hill road but I thankfully went off the google maps directions. From Lutsen I went up Caribou Trail and essentially followed this dirt ‘highway’ all the way to the trailhead which is 21 miles up the road. The area is very well marked. Fill out your free permit and yes, I concur there are some obnoxious mosquitoes but they only 'bugged' me around dusk. Car camped in the parking area, woke up around 5, and started hiking. Temp dropped to 23.

The hike itself is very pretty early in the morning as you get the morning sun, the fog, and stillness all around. It only took about 50 minutes to get to the top. The sign down by the lake had been replaced and point the direction to Eagle Mountain. About another mile beyond this and you'll come to an overlook...keep walking until you reach the second overlook. To get to the high point simply turn your back to the second overlook and walk up. There's a big rock with a placard/geo marker along with an ammo box filled with stuff. Met Will, another HP'er, and we had a good chat while walking back to TH.

If you don't want to drive out the same way you came in you can turn left out of the parking lot (assuming you came from Lutsen) and follow the dirt 'highway' to Grand Marais which makes a nice little loop.
