Ascent Trip Report

From US 64 in Taos Canyon I took the turn off to Valle Escondido and Garcia Park. From the beginning of FR 437 it was 7 mi. to the intersection with FR 438. I parked after another 2 mi. next to an unnumbered track that goes up to a trailhead for the South Boundary Trail. It's 0.3 mi. from 438 to the S. Boundary Trail. A 4wd vehicle could drive up this 0.3 mi.

The South Boundary Trail skirts the north flank of the mountain. My topo map showed it reaching slightly over 10200 roughly due north of the peak, but the topo map is outdated and the trail has been relocated downhill a bit and never topped much over 10000 before I found myself starting to head away from the peak ( I crossed the defunct remnants of the old trail on my bushwhack upward).That left a substantially longer and steeper bushwhack than I expected with close to two thirds of the total elevation gain in only a little over half a mile ( and lots of downed to trees to scramble over).

On the way down I followed a fence line to a spot slightly southwest of the S. Boundary trailhead. Nobody has worked on the fence in a long time and there are lots of downed trees across it, but since they had to clear a path at one time to build the fence, this route doesn't demand quite as much of a steeple chase as my bushwhack up, and it's a lot shorter (1.5 mi. as opposed to 2.9).

Not as nice a hike as many of the others I've done in this vicinity with relatively few views and rough ground to cover.
