Ascent Trip Report

What a gorgeous day to wonderful views!
Started hiking from the St. Huberts parking at 9:15 am with Lil-Yeti, the Red Goat, Emay and Christi. It is a beautiful morning with temps in the 60’s. The original plan was to do Sawteeth only, going up the scenic trail and down the weld trail. I mentioned that we are hiking Sawteeth to Christi and she emphatically accepted the invitation to come with us. She was telling us that the views from Pyramid are great and she would like to visit Pyramid too. So we changed the plan to go up Weld trail then to Pyramid and then back to Sawteeth and return via the scenic trail from Lower Ausable Lake.
We used the East River trail to get to the outlet of the Lower Ausable Lake just to keep the long walk a bit more exciting than going in on the road. With the sunshine and blue skies the lake looked wonderful. After taking a short break we headed up the Weld trail at 11:15am.
The easy part along the river is soon forgotten as we begin the ascent up the Weld Trail. Kaerstin is not feeling well today so she decides that it is best if she tries to reach Sawteeth only. So she and Gudrun now take it easy with the goal of Sawteeth while Emay, Christi and I head toward Pyramid before we rejoin at Sawteeth.
We got to the junction of the Gothics-Sawteeth trail at 12:25. The steady up and the warming temperatures has gotten us warm enough to wear shorts and tee-shirts. We took a short break at the junction to refuel and headed toward Pyramid at 12:35. The trail to Pyramid is VERY steep but nothing too tricky. Even though there were some pretty rainy days last week, the trail is surprisingly dry. Arriving at Pyramid was the highlight of the day. I remember seeing the short trail that is lined with evergreens on both sides, with the path going along bare rock. From the trail, it looks like the path to the edge of the earth. I went up the rock and BAM, when you pop out into the open there is the Great Range just staring at you! It was FANTASTIC!
There was a pretty good wind out on the open rock, gusting to just over 25 mph. We took pictures, had something to eat and in general sat around enjoying the view. Meantime, Kaerstin and Gudrun arrived on Sawteeth and we were talking to them on the walkie-talkies. With my new super-zoom camera we actually took a picture of them from Pyramid!
We left Pyramid at 1:50pm and reached to junction to Sawteeth at 2:15pm. The trail to Sawteeth is just as steep if not steeper than that up to Pyramid. I am VERY proud that Gudrun accompanied KK up to the peak. She did a great job today. The views from Sawteeth were great, but could not compare with those from Pyramid. We did take several minutes to just hang out on Sawteeth as is was a bit better protected from the wind, before we made the steep trek down the trail to the lake.
There were a couple very nice lookout points overlooking Lower Ausable Lake and in the late afternoon light it was beautiful (but a bit windy).
We reached the Lake Road at 5:30pm where we refilled our water bottles for the long (boring) trek back to the car. We did use the road as we were all a bit tired by now. We got to the cars at 7:00pm for a great day and one for the memory books!
