Ascent Trip ReportSince Lil-Yeti is in Germany with her mother this week, I figured I’d head to Maine for the weekend and tackle a few peaks there. The original plan was to do the Crockers today, but the weather man was wrong (again) and today is shaping up to be a wonderful day so Emay and I headed to Bigelow Preserve to do peaks that promised better views. We did not get very far down Stratton Brook Pond Rd before we had to park, the goal was to start from the end of the road and do an up/down hike via the Fire Wardens Trail. We started hiking down the road at 8:20am and not far from where we parked the van we came across the AT crossing. We looked at the map and decided since it was turning out to be a nice day, we would make a loop hike out of it and headed up the AT instead.
We had some wonderful views on the summit of South Horn which reached at 11:20am. The trail was basically dry and there are some pretty steep sections.
We reached the summit of Bigelow West Peak at 12:35 where we had some wonderful views even though some high clouds are beginning to roll in. The trail was pretty steep toward the top of West Peak with the final meters a fun scramble. Emay and I took lots of pictures and had some lunch before heading off the peak at 12:55.
The trail between West peak and Avery is pretty steep both coming off West Peak and going back up to Avery. We ran into some thick ice on the ascent to Avery, slowed us down a bit, but we got over it without anyone crashing. We reached the summit of Avery at 1:20pm. The wind is getting a bit stronger so we didn’t stay too long, but before leaving the area we went over to what is left of the old fire tower. We located the benchmarks while we were there. The views down to the lake were gorgeous. Great day to be in Bigelow!
We left the summit at 1:30pm. The hike down the Fire Wardens trail was pretty good, I must say that may be the longest man made rock stairs that I have yet come across. We reached the junction of the Horns Pond trail at 3:05, the steep part of the hike is now over and we soon reached the end of the Stratton Pond Rd. Before we reached the car, it started to rain. We reached the car at 4:20pm. It was a great loop hike over 3 peaks with great views!
