Ascent Trip Report

Having never before attempted a climb of this magnitude myself, and despite having adequately prepared myself for the climb with a series of hikes (including with snow gear) in SoCal, I didn't adequately prepare Philip (still 15 at the time) for the grueling climb with heavy pack and in ice to Trail Camp, and he suffered from a pretty bad case of altitude sickness above 10,500 feet. We made it to Trail Camp just before sunset and slept fitfully (if at all). Since he still felt pretty bad in the morning, I abandoned any goal of summiting and set out solo up The Chute for Trail Crest, just so I could see the Sierra on the other side. I glissading back down The Chute, packed up camp and got Philip going, and (with the help of some glissading along the way), got him back down to lower altitude as quickly as possible. He perked up right about 10,500 and practically ran the last couple of miles to The Portal.
