Ascent Trip Report

For the second time I tried to summit Sunol ridge. the first attempt was on may 12th and I ended up climbing Pleasanton Ridge when I couldn't find out how to get the the trailhead of Sunol Ridge. This time, armed with a better map (actually, a map in the first place) I found it. I parked on Railroad Ave which is a dead-end street. The plan was to run out and back on the Sunol Ridge trail. However, about a half mile in I mistakenly stayed to the right at a fork that I didn't even notice was a fork. This lead to a dead-end with a fenced gate that appeared impassible. So I took a left and went up an open field where the tall grasses had some kind of burrs that stuck in my shoes and socks.

After a mile I met up with the Sunol Ridge Trail again and continued following it. I was encouraged by the sight of cows in the area - to me this means no mountain lions around. I don't know if this is actually a valid thought process but I didn't start until 5:24PM and i always consider the mountain lion possibility when i visit the east bay in late afternoon.

I followed the ridge to the top while observing Pleasanton Ridge where I had been only a couple weeks before. It was a quite a bit windier at the top, almost cool, and not much to do. There was some restricted area up there and some cows that seemed to be peakbagging as well.

The way down was uneventful - I followed the correct trail the entire way down, being careful not to startle the cows too much. There were a couple occasions where I caught some by surprised and the cows in this area were much more timid than ones I'd run into on other trails where they would sometimes sit in the way on the trail. I don't know how i missed the correct trail going up. It seemed pretty obvious going down.
