Ascent Trip Report

We started our ascent of the Krottenkopf from the top station of the cable car up the nearby Wank, which is a (rightly) famous viewpoint near Garmisch-Partenkirchen looking across to the Zugspitze. A short ridgewalk to the Rosswank was followed by a steady descent to the Esterbergalm on a well worn path. Picking up the rough surfaced road which would later be our descent route back to the car park at the bottom of the cable car, we ascended gently up the valley for 20 minutes or so then turned left on a signposted and well graded 4WD road. Higher up, as we reached a hanging valley with a flattish bottom we hit some significant snow patches but not too soft that we sank in too badly. The path then ascends to the col between below the Krottenkof where the Weilheimer Hut offers food and drink and a terrasse with great views to the north. Much refreshed, the short ascent to the top of the Krottenkopf was quickly overcome and the reward was the superb kind of view you often get from isolated pre-alps with snowy mountains to the south and the lake studded Bavarian plain to the north.

We descended by the route of ascent to the Esterbergalm and then continued down the road to the cable car car park, before driving round to Ettal, a town famous for the beer made in it´s Kosterbrauerei....
