Ascent Trip Report

Despite lethargy and a bit of leg-heaviness after hiking Algonquin/Iroquois the previous day, I decided to do a couple of short hikes. Mount Gilligan could NOT have been a better choice. After some initial confusion in finding the trailhead (I got to meet a VERY nice lady from NYC who not only clarified directions for me but also invited me to dinner!), I found the Sunrise trail and pretty much had the mountain to myself. The path was a bit difficult to pick out in spots--it looks rarely used--but markers kept me on-task and I was able to summit in about 45 minutes. Don't let the length or modest size of the mountain fool you--the elevation gain is steep in spots. Summit views of the High Peaks from the eastern Adirondacks were certainly unique and felt VERY intimate. If you're a weekend visitor to this region and hope to find solitude, steer clear of the High Peaks and seek out the quietude of Mount Gilligan...
