Ascent Trip Report

The weather in the Catskills was GLORIOUS as my nephew and I climbed Indian Head Mountain from the Prediger Road trailhead. We ran out of time or else we'd have also bagged Twin.

The going was a bit muddy in in few spots just after the intersection of the main trail with the Jimmy Dolan Notch trail. The variety on this trail makes it a treat--one gets peaceful woods walk with placid streams, steep pitches of ascent, narrow paths hovering over long, dangerous drops, scrambling, and multiple viewpoints (at least 4 distinct spots that I found) from which to view and photograph the surrounding landscape (I particularly enjoyed my glimpses of the Overlook Mountain tower/summit and Karma Triyana Dharmachakra).

In addition to the exciting climbing to get to the viewpoints, the long, peaceful walk along the summit ridge of Indian Head was a sheer joy. The descent down the Notch--though steep--went very quickly.
