Ascent Trip ReportI had been looking forward to this challenge since I learned of its existence. To me, part of the peak bagging experience, at least in the Appalachians, is that the ascent seem like an accomplishment. Not simply a drive to within 6/10 mile to the summit and then strolling to the top. This is one of those peaks that can be bagged in this manner. However, I chose to tackle the 6.1 mile trail from Trackrock Gap to the summit.
It was a pretty cold Easter morning. After the initial 1 1/2 - 2 mile brutal climb, the trail runs along a ridge top for most of the way. I could see rime ice on the top of Brasstown and Chimneytop. Basically, you are climbing four mountains to get to Brasstown. One stretch near Blue Bluff is pretty difficult, followed by the great views you get from the summit of Chimneytop. I saw absolutely no one in the 8.5 hours that it took to complete this in and out trip.
