Ascent Trip ReportUnfortunately, when you are nearly 950 miles from home, and on a somewhat tight schedule, you hike no matter what the weather. This day was rainy with very low clouds. As soon as I left the car and began the hike, I found myself in the middle of a lowlands hardwood forest enveloped with fog. It was too warm to put on the rain gear so I basically hiked through on and off showers happily sporting my polyester gear. I am still amazed at how fast they dry.
The trail up to the AT was pretty uneventful. The forest though shrouded was beautiful. There was no one out there with me. Eventually, the AT crossed my path and I turned north making my way to where the trees become sparse and the rocky top begins to take over. Finally, I saw the stone monument that signifies the top of the peak. A few pictures for proof (there was absolutely no view)and I continued north.
Shortly, I realized that this side of Bear Mountain was not to be like the one I just crossed. The trail was bouldery with several drops that required me to sit on my keister and slide down to the next rock. They were slippery with the rain. I was glad to get off of that section.
The AT intersected with Paradise Lane Trail which I took back to Underhill Trail and to my car thus completing the loop hike. There is one stretch of trail on Paradise Lane that takes you through a forest that was carpeted by thousands of the greenest ferns you will ever see. It was magnificent. I plan on returning to do this one on a sunny, clear day.
