Ascent Trip ReportA dirt road/bushwack from hwy 670 ...... 3 miles, 2 hour RT.
The plan was to use Bob Schwab's route, it was not to be. From hwy 370/670 in Orson, I drove south on 670 for 1.86 miles to a dirt road on the right, there was no red gate, so I drove up to a yellow gate at 250 yards (I would find out later that I was on the wrong road, the dirt road with a red gate was 200 yards up the road).
I parked at the yellow gate and walked/climbed the dirt road .6 miles to the ridge. On the left at 50 yards is a Communication Tower and on the right at 80 yards is another Tower.
I walked northbound around the Tower, and picked up a track that I followed up the ridge 300 yards to Bob's Schwab's road which I followed for 400 yards to AREA 1 summit ..... capped with a green roofed shed in a huge open grass field, 360 panorama. MY spot was beside the shed at GPS 41.79161,-75.45567.
I walked the grass field north to its end at 200 yards, a grass track on the left side continues northerly for another 200 yards to Bob's barbed wire fence. I stepped over the fence and continued on tracks/bushwack always looking for the high ground. At less than 100 yards past the fence I chose my spot for AREA 2 at GPS 41.79588,-75.45477, not obvious.
I continued for another 80 yards to the fairly obvious high
ground for AREA 3, my spot was at 2 rocks GPS 41.79668,-75.45454.
The woods are fairly open but not without blowdown and some nasty thorny bushes. You have to wind your way through the bad stuff, I estimate the one-way distance at 1.5 miles.
"IN HIKING, EVERY TRIP IS FILLED WITH NUMEROUS OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERIOUS ERROR. ENJOY IT."
