Ascent Trip ReportHad a great day of mountain biking at Auburn State Rec Area near Sacramento with my friend, Dan Dolan, all day Sunday. No peaks, but a great time. I crashed at his place in Fallon on Sunday night and planned my next peak for Monday after a much-needed shower and dinner. He had recently done Job Peak and had spot-on accurate driving directions for a western approach, which are in his trip report from March 2012. So, we looked at maps and the next morning I was off. I was able to push the Yaris to 4,440 ft to the bottom of Pete/Gov't Canyon. From here, I mountain biked up to 6,300 ft to just below the spring in Gov't Canyon and stashed the bike in some bushes. The hike up from the spring was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I couldn't find much sign of the trail on the topo map that begins going steeply up a ridge from 6,800 ft. Below 6,800 ft, the "trail" in Gov't Canyon is a jeep track that would be easily passable to any vehicle with clearance. I doubt 4wd would need to be engaged as long as it was not wet. I topped out, signed the register, ate some lunch, and noted that only 1 person had climbed the peak since my buddy Dan in March. The hike back to the spring and then bike was uneventful and from here, I bombed down the jeep trail on my mountain bike to the car. The bike certainly saved me a lot of time, both going up and down. Stats (hike/bike combo): 12.2 miles round trip 18.8 mph max speed 3 hrs 35 min moving time 42 min stopped (which includes lunch on top) 3.4 mph moving avg
