Ascent Trip ReportPass Island was cool. I had never driven over Deception Pass before, so this was fun. Found the benchmark.
A nice end to the peakbagger portion of the day.
But I went on a bit from there. I took 20 back to I-5 and headed south. I decided to check out Camano Island, which I have been dreading attempting for four years. I was going to scout some points but decided to just go for the northernmost point, the bushwhack point.
I first tried to push in from Dodge to the north. I turned around fairly quickly. I went back to Island Crest to attempt from the east. I found a flagged route in several places, but they didn't get very far into the bush. My Washington bushwhacking experience has increased quite a bit: it wasn't easy to move through, but it wasn't terribly damaging.
I was here a bit late in the season. The thorns left the visible scratches, but the stinging nettles - which are thankfully only waist high at this point - left the painful stinging, which continues hours later of course. No worries... at this point I'm getting used to dealing with them.
I really tried to find the 10' branch mentioned by Edward Earl in 2008, but did not. I spend at least an hour and a half in the bush, bashing around, and I am satisfied that I hit the highest point somewhere in my travels within the contour.
I did not drive over to attempt the other four contours, as I'll return at some point in the future. One day it will be very nice to have Washington's lowest county highpoint behind me...
