Ascent Trip ReportI visited Tom, Field and Willey starting near the AMC Highland Center on Route 302, taking the Avalon Trail and A-Z Trail to the Tom Spur. After descending Mt. Tom, I took the Willey Range Trail over Field and to Willey, where I turned around. I made the descent back to my starting point via the Avalon Trail from Mt. Field, making the scramble up Mt. Avalon to take a peek at the view. I didn't stay on Avalon long, as I was getting concerned about the daylight situation (but of course I always carry a couple of headlamps, should one be needed).
I encountered some mud and flowing water, and plus the monorail wasn't completely melted at higher elevations, but overall the trails were not bad for a spring day. I considered using the microspikes as the monorail tended to be stable and slippery, but I never did. The monorail sections were fairly brief, and whenever I walked around it, I tried to avoid stepping on the moss and other vegetation.
Before this hike, I did a trail run to check out Frankenstein Cliff and Arethusa Falls, also highly recommended.
