Ascent Trip Report

On a drive from Spa-Francorchamps to Berlin, I decided to tag off 3 German highpoints today, this being the last of the three.

I parked at the Schierke Bahnhof station and then followed the trail (gravel road) that parallels the train, slowly rising, for about 4.5km. A fairly rocky/blocky trail then heads steeply to the right for about 1km to meet the paved road and the final 1km to the summit area. There are a multitude of paths and routes to the top and all branches are very well marked. I was happy that everything was easy to follow as I started out at 8PM and got back to the car by 10:05PM (the trail is considerably more challenging in darkness, but still not a "problem" to follow. Unfortunately, it was whited-out and misting for most of my hike, making the rocks and wooden walkways quite slick.

In looking at the map at this trailhead, it seems that a shorter route starts from the end of the Schierke village, likely saving a few kilometres round-trip (most of it being the railway grade road...).
