Ascent Trip Report

Started 3 pm eastern 2/8/08 at Massie Gap. Took the AT spur to the AT. Made our way along the AT to the Wilburn Ridge Trail. Made camp on the plain just past the summit of Wilburn Ridge. About 4 to 5 in the morning a windstorm with 40 to 50 mph winds came through which neccessitated a camp site move. After moving our camp site about a half mile closer to the summit on the AT we made our summit bid about 1 pm on Saturday the 9th. We continued on the AT until we reached the Mt Rogers spur. We made the summit at approximately 230 to 3 pm eastern time on the 9th. Nothing to see at the top since it is densely wooded but there are nice views on the way up and some really scenic areas especially on and around the Wilburn Ridge area. Hiked out on the AT back to Massie Gap on Sunday with severe winds (some gusts reaching an estimated 70 mph)and flurries.
