Ascent Trip Report

From the Oklahoma/Cleveland CHP's (these three are all conveniently located near the interstate and took me less than two hours combined including an extended conversation with the gentleman at the McClain CHP) I got back onto 152 and then 44/152 south to the exit for 37 west, south in about three miles on 76, west on 16th st. When my GPS told me I was a bit more than a half mile more or less north of the hp coordinates, I headed down a lane that dead ends and offers no appropriate access, but back on 16th I noticed a long drive just a few yards further west. The drive featured a gate (open) and unpromising signage ("private road NO TRESPASSING Do not enter) but the rebel in me decided to brazen it out and head down the drive. No one was home at the house at the end of the drive but I spotted an elderly gentleman on a tractor mowing the tall grass (for hay I presume, but I'm a city boy so what do I know?). It took me a while to get his attention. Given the spirit of the signs at the entrance to his property, he was surprisingly charming when I explained my intent. Sure I could wander across his field. On my return he explained that a real estate agent had explained to him that the county high point was on his property and someone was eager to buy the spot in order to put up a water tower. He gave a long and convoluted explanation of the water tower question and seemed pleased that I had recognized that the high ground was on his property. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I had hopped a fence at the top of his hill onto a neighboring field, and while I wasn't certain I think the highest spot is on his neighbor's side of the line.
