Ascent Trip Report

Dent de Crolles, 2082m, P684m

Map: 1:25k: 3334OT

Stats: 600mH, 5km (3km by direct route)

Time: 20 Aug 06, ascent 1h, descent 1:10

Start: from WSW, car park below Col de Coq, 7km N of St Ismier

Route: signposted GR route; path traversing ?SE below cliffs, then paintmarked route zigzagging up through terraces beside stream.
Descent N to rejoin GR route leading back to car park

Difficulties: short passages of scrambling on ascent through terraces: 1 hardish move assisted by cable; unprotected scrambling beside stream on wet limestone is simple but may be a little awkward to descend. Compass would be needed for descent to N in poor visibility. GR route descending SW to Trou du Glaz Grotte (cave) has passages of via ferrata (not expected from 1:25k mapping), not particularly exposed and excellent fun.

Trig point: mapped, not found. Could be under cairn.

Notes: Highly distinctive profile seen well from Autoroute to S, very impressive precipice dropping S from summit. Summit cross. Late evening, 1 party met descending the Dent, area generally fairly busy. Great views, especially of Piton de Bellefont to N.
