Ascent Trip Report

Since I was doing four county high points in the area, I figured why not do this as well. From High Knob, the site of the Gallatin and Hardy chp's (and worth a trip because its more of a hill than you'd expect in Ill.), I drove south to Karber's Ridge Rd. The road to Garden of the Gods is about half way to Ill. 34 and is well signed. As you enter the Garden of the Gods area you'll see signs for backpacker's parking to the left and the main observation area straight ahead. The trailhead for the Wilderness hp is at the backpacker's parking. The trail climbs slightly upward to the high point(s) in the woods in about 0.3 mi but continue onward another 0.2 to a rocky overlook called Indian Point where I clambered about. I was impressed with Indian Point until I did the rest of the Garden of the Gods observation trail and discovered that the rock formations along the main observation trail are much more impressive than on this wilderness trail.
