Ascent Trip Report

Given the dryness of the past few days and having completed other similar summits very recently, we decided to try this trail although officially closed due to the mud season. The beginning was completely dry and there was less than 50m (total) of muddier sections we encountered - all were easily avoided by crossing on rocks, so we decided to continue through the snow (more than half of the trail) to the summit. We met two other hikers on route, also enjoying the excellent day. I understand the idea of closing trails at certain times, but some judgment needs to be permitted for experienced hikers/climbers who don't damage the trail, but rather clean up windfall and garbage on their way. An even better idea would be to close it when it really is muddy or a problem and otherwise keep it open...anyway, enough spouting, this was a pleasant and enjoyable short hike. This was the 16th eastern state highpoint completed in 6 days before heading back to Canada.
