Ascent Trip ReportOn the way to this hike along Rt.28 I spotted and photographed an American Bald Eagle in flight rising in a thermal. The last 3 times I attempted to hike this peak I have been unsuccessful. The last time I tried this peak I stupidly injured my thumb and bailed. On my way down Rt.47 on that last attempt I also saw a Bald Eagle, he was in a field and flew away with some critter in it's claws. I took today's sighting as a good omen. I returned to McKinley Hollow Parking area to try this one again even though i knew the route from Rider hollow was pro-ported to be easier. I have done the Rider Hollow side of this trail during my winter ascent of Balsam a few months ago. I knew the start of this hike was confusing due to the massive damage from Irene, hence my thumb injury, during that attempt I also got a little lost as I meandered forward before turning back. Starting out I passed the new bridge and continued down to the stream crossing where I was thwarted by an angry dog, I quickly crossed the stream and bushwhacked up the steep hillside to some pink ribbon which I now understand is the re-route. Continued on to the stream again and crossed easily, continuing up there was another stream crossing clearly marked with cairns. The next bit was very steep, almost 45 degree angle for a good distance, at the top of this section it eased up to normal uphill Catskill hiking. The steep part resembled the steepness of Plateau from the campground. The rest of the hike was uneventful for the most part. I saw only 2 other people on the trail this day. There really isn't a summit on Eagle and really only marked by a cairn. I returned to the car by the same route. The lean-to seems in good shape and has a privy nearby.
