Ascent Trip ReportMy Dad and I got to the Waterville Valley ski area early in the morning. We started the hike shortly after arriving on the Mount Tecumseh Trail.
The trail started out at an easy grade for the first couple tenths of a mile and then crossed a brook. After the crossing, the grade varied a bit. The woods through which the trail went were kind of thin, with views to the east through the trees. On this part of the trail, most of it wasn't bad, with a few spot steep parts. About two-fifths of the way up the mountain, the trail descended briefly and made another brook crossing. After that, it ascended more steeply.
Shortly after that, there was a sign pointing toward a viewpoint. We went to it, and it was a spot on a ski slope, which revealed a view east that included the Tripyramids. We then went back to the main trail and continued.
After the view, the trail's steep grade became more constant, which made our legs ache a little, especially on the way down. The views included the view through the trees, and views of the summit. Other than a spot few cairns and mini rock walls, this part of the trail was kind of plain.
Eventually, I could see sky through the trees, and I knew that we were close to the junction with the Sosman Trail, which we later reached. We continued on the Mt. Tecumseh Trail.
The trail ascended at an easy to moderate grade to a fork. At this fork, we could take either path to get to the summit. We went left. We quickly ran into downed trees, which were a little tricky to cross. Up here, it was colder than at the base, so much that tree branches were frozen to the ground. The trail lined the upper slopes, with a view from them, and it made a U-turn and got steeper. There was a frozen dusting of snow which made traction difficult. Soon, we reached the summit.
The summit of Mt. Tecumseh is mostly wooded, with some views that include the Tripyramids, the Osceolas, and Mount Washington. We took a break, took pictures, and went down the mountain the way we came.
