Ascent Trip Report

We got to the Mount Major parking area located off of NH 11 in Alton at about 9:15 AM. We gathered our packs and then decided to hike up the Mount Major Trail.

The trail followed an old, rough road at first. It wasn't that steep, but it got steeper later on, then leveled out a bit. The trail was wide, relatively easy to follow, and kept going through more and more woods all the way to the Brook Trail junction.

After that, the trail got rougher and steeper, with obstructed views of Lake Winnipesaukee along the way. Soon, we came to some rock faces that looked tricky, so we took a shortcut around them. After rejoining the main trail, there was a detour around some ledges, which we took. After that and a pre-summit viewpoint, we reached the summit, at about 10:00 AM.

The summit was a little crowded, chilly, and breezy, but it had awesome views over the lake.

We made a loop hike out of this and took the Boulder Loop Trail down. It gently descended at first, but then got steep after that. We saw many people ascending as we were descending. After seeing a few boulders and crossing some bridges, we got back to the parking lot.

This was Belknap Range #3 for me. I want to get a Belknap Range patch now that I know about it (there was a flyer explaining the patches at the start of the Mt. Major Trail). This was a great hike with great views, and it was a good way to spend the morning!
