Ascent Trip ReportTook Kentucky Natives Mary and Bobby Johnson to the top of their state on a visit during vacation in the Smoky Mountains. They had never been to the top, but growing up in the area gave them excellent stories about the area we were driving through. If you are coming from the Kentucky side, I was chatting and following the GPS in my iPhone. I knew I was looking for Rt 160 in Cumberland, but my GPS didn't, and chose a shorter route on College Road, just about a half mile from route 160. We followed this back a few miles, but it was all on coal company land and sketch gravel roads. It will (according to the GPS) get you there, but take 160 instead. It actually connects to 160 near the summit.
We had decent views from the top, grey ridges heading off to the east. We thought we picked out the Mt. Mitchell massif on the horizon.
