Ascent Trip ReportThis should of been an very uneventful deal but.......I ended up in the hospital. Later on that. Climbed the Conservation Tower first as recommended and it is about 60 to 65 feet to the locked trap door. Very nice views from there. Very open and steep so some with height anxiety will not like it. The couple behind us gave up after one story. Karen liked it.
The Trail to the HP is easy and flat. We decided to go past the HP and hike the 3 mile loop of the Mina Sauk Falls trail. The falls are worth the trip to make it a hike. Lot of reptiles. Saw 2 snakes including a ring neck snake and 3 species of lizards. At least 20 lizards on the trip - the most I have ever seen on a short hike in my life.
The falls were a series of pool and drops. Adds something to the trip to go see them. We had 65 feet of add gain up and down bumps each way and then another say 60 feet of gain climbing up and down the falls to see them. Including the tower I estimate the add gain as:
65(tower)+65(add gain)+ extra climbing along the falls up and down (60)+ gain from the bottom of the falls at around elevation 1,300 (1770-1300=470); therefore 65+65+60+470=660 On return another 65 (add gain)
Got back and rewarded ourselves with a nice dinner and a bed and breakfast. Had one beer. It had been a month since my last bout with afib and aflutter that landed me in a hospital in BVI. Damn alchohol! Ok Dr. I get it this time no more ever! Heart started fibbing and fluttering and went to triage center. Dr proclaimed "you have no P waves!' ha! and stuck me with an IV and called for a ambulance. Karen began to cry. I said all is fine!15 minutes into the ride to the hospital in St Louis (2 hours away) the EMT in back began to get all freaked out about my ekg and the numbers bouncing around from too slow to way too fast and next thing I know they call for a helicopter ride and I spend 3 days in the hospital! Geeeeeeeeeesh OK not even one beer? Diagnosis a-fib/fluter triggered by alcohol one month apart. The helicopter ride was $25k! I think I should have at least been med-evacuated off K2 for that price geeeeeesh!
