Ascent Trip ReportParked in the sr-613 turnout off sr-603 and hiked up the forest service road to 'Scales' where there is a nice rest area for AT'ers. From there, followed the Crest Trail to Rhododendron Gap and then proceeded to ascend Mt. Rogers off the AT again. The HP is simply a rock atop a long rolling ridge with no view but the hike from Scales was beautiful (and recommended instead of the Mt. Rogers TH). The geo marker is easily found.
Followed the AT down to Deep Gap where I apparently missed a sign because I followed a trail down to Elk Garden instead of down the Mt Rogers trail to sr-603. Ended up coming out on some road where I then proceeded to hike back to sr-603 via the grassy branch trail. This was a more circuitous route around Mt. Rogers (roughly 18-20 miles with the lost route but only 13 or so if you stayed on track) but pretty easy to march out in a day.
Encountered 4 of the mini ponies again, all of whom had little colts running around.
