Ascent Trip ReportI really enjoy alpine peaks, but the enjoyment of the scraggly stuff is what makes county highpointing more than a hobby for me. It's a love. Mayes Co. did not disappoint. It's really aesthetic, in an eastern Oklahoma sort of way.
Previous reports tell you all you need to know. I parked at an unmarked gate not far from the very top of the hill, across the road from a house with a couple of dogs that greeted my arrival. I looked around for someone to ask permission to go through the gate and didn't notice anyone out and about. I headed in. A minute later a truck pulled up to that last house and a kid in his 20s came out. I headed back to see if they thought anyone would mind. The truck was a lady delivering the mail. I asked the guy about ownership and he said he wouldn't climb the tower if he were me (I wouldn't have - it's behind a fence and not necessary for completion) and part of the land back there was owned by the state and he had seen so many people head back behind the gate that he couldn't keep track. I talked to them briefly about county highpointing and they were both interested (mildly) in the fact that they were near the highest point in Mayes Co.
Everything is the same as in prior reports. Witness marker on the fence around the tower, benchmark set in concrete nearby.
Took a few photos, moved on to Arkansas.
