Ascent Trip Report

Nice trip done over the kids' Spring Break. Drove over from El Paso with family friends. Quintin struggled a bit with the climb since he had been diagnosed with mono just days before. Poor guy. He did make it to the top. His comment, "I need to climb this thing now because there is no chance we are coming back. There is no reason to come here again."

Begun ascent around 9:30am. Beautiful day...until the winds kicked in. The trail is well maintained and easy to follow. The climb begins with considerable switchbacks then leads into a shaded length of trail. The final 2-ish miles are exposed with fantastic views. This region of the country is quite desolate which provides a different type of beauty. Our party separated into two groups, mainly b/c 6 year old Carson was moving at a pace that was two slow for the pair of 11 year olds and pair of 9 year olds.

My first summit was with the older kids and then after descending a mile or so I met up with my wife, son and family friend. I joined them for the abbreviated summiting. Upon reaching the top Carson was very proud of himself. A park ranger that had been walking the trail told Carson "As far as I know there has never been a six year old on top of this mountain". Whether or not that was true it is something Carson is very proud of.
