Ascent Trip ReportBeautiful spring day, temps in 80s. We took the 2.5 mile trail up that starts just past the entry gate at the ranger station (of course, you can drive all the way to the top on this peak, if you want). Trail is rugged, rutted and root-filled, but takes you along the ridge line far enough away from the paved road to the top that you don't notice it. Gorgeous views of Blue Ridge ranges all the way to the horizon and much walking under tree canopy. At top, on wheelchair accessible viewing platform, we could see 360-degrees and forever on this cloudless April day. Breathtaking. On the way down, veered off to the Commissary Trail about a half mile down, which is more open with views, and there is a lovely creek with cascades where we stopped and splashed around. Not another person in sight the whole hike! Commissary Trail ends right back at the parking lot. Rhododendrons everywhere -- when they bloom in June, it's gonna be magnificent.
