Ascent of Big Knob on 2012-04-15
|Date:||Sunday, April 15, 2012|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||USA-South Carolina|
| Elevation:||945 ft / 288 m|
Ascent Trip ReportThe woods road that previous COHPers have described (across the road from Bethel Grove AME Church) is now gated and posted. You could walk around the gate and take your chances. But you don't have to. The gate is intended to guard the radio towers, which are not on the summit.
Instead, continue 0.2 miles westbound on Bethel Grove Church Road, passing a fenced area that protects one of the guywires for the radio tower. Just beyond this is an old driveway on the right where you can pull safely off the road to park. Hike N/NW through the roadside brush into wide-open woods for a brief but steep climb to the rocky ridge--unusual topography for this part of SC.
The old fire tower is still there, marked with a sign that says Enter Tower At Own Risk. The cab is open but I didn't go that far--the wooden steps didn't look trustworthy.
There are large outcroppings on both sides of the tower. The one on the east side appears a little higher, but touch them both to be sure.
Round trip 0.4 miles. My 102nd COHP and 10th in SC.
