Ascent of Mount Shasta on 2011-06-24
|Date:||Friday, June 24, 2011|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||14162 ft / 4316 m|
Ascent Trip ReportThe success rate of summitting Mt Shasta is 33-40%. We were lucky to have no precipitation but the winds as usual, were strong which added to the challenge of an average 23% gradient on summit day (6,300 vertical feet over 5 miles). It was a grueling 9.5 hours but finally at noon we stood atop the 2nd highest peak in the Cascade range. Except for a few hairy spots, coming down was a breeze with our return to base-camp taking 3 hours (really helped by glissading down the longer slopes).
Horse Camp served as our base-camp with mountain spring water & a compost toilet making the lower elevation more camp-friendly.
Our guides via REI/Shasta Mountain Guides were knowledgeable, friendly & not too bad in the snow kitchen.
