Ascent Trip ReportMt. Kilimanjaro at 19,340 feet (5895M) is the tallest peak in Africa. We decided to do the somewhat more strenuous & longer, but more scenic Machame route. Salim and I arrived on a nonstop from Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro Int'l that was filled with hikers from Europe & North America. The airport was overwhelmed with one planeload & our duffel bags took forever to arrive on the cranky carousel. After shuttling on a dirt road we got to Springlands Hotel in Moshi where we spent our 1st night in Tanzania. The next morning we met our guide and after registering at Machame Gate set afoot through mountain rainforest (no bamboos!). On Day 6 (Jan 15, 2009), we summited at 6:30 a.m. after leaving Barafu Hut (elevation 15,000 feet/oxygenation 55% of sea level) at just past midnight & trekking 4.5 miles with headlamps up the steep final assault. Having achieved our goal of summiting, we decided to hike the 24-mile direct descent route to Mweka Gate where we arrived at 8:45 at night. What a day!!!
