Ascent Trip ReportPyramid Peak is most often hiked from the south starting on highway S22 east of Borrego Springs. The route up Palo Verde Wash is about the easiest approach. To reach Palo Verde Wash take S22 east from the Christmas Circle in Borrego Springs for 13.9 miles. Park on the right side where there is a dirt road heading SE in the wash. Start the hike heading north across the highway and up the broad, boulder-covered wash. The jeep trail shown on the topo map has been washed away and no trace can be found that is any help in hiking. After one mile turn NE and stay on the right side of the wash and look for a cairn marking the start of an old miner's trail that heads up the slope. UTM coordinates here are: 576500E, 3686260N. Follow this trail up the slope and past a mine shaft on the left on the other side of the canyon. The trail will cross a broad saddle and then continue NE along a steep slope at the upper end of Smoke Tree Canyon. The trail ends as you drop into the wash. Turn left here and go north for about a hundred feet and then leave the wash going to the right up a slope to a ridgeline that leads all the way up to another ridge coming SSE from the peak. Once on the main ridge go left (north) and contour to the left side of a small peak and then on to the summit. Allow about 3 1/2 hours for the ascent and 2 to 2 1/2 hours to return. Round-trip distance is 7 3/4 miles and the elevation gain is 2650 ft. 3/95 RLC
