Ascent Trip ReportWe climbed Afkades after our morning ascent of the two Titiron summits.
From the northwest an unpaved road leaves the main highway at N35.30008 E24.20229 on a hairpin bend. We drive about 500m and park at N35.29962 E24.20613, 761m just before a rutted section too rough for our rather low clearance rental car. With a more capable vehicle it would be possible to drive several km further although the road was snow drifted higher up at the time of our visit (would be snow free in summer).
We hike the main unpaved road, shortly keeping R at N35.29715 E24.20762. At N35.28903 E24.21648 turn sharply R then in 100m keep L following the main dirt road (we missed this turn and went too far NE before making an entertaining but rather messy beeline for the summit).
Follow the road to N35.28273 E24.23179, 1212m then head S up an easy angled scree gully making a beeline for the summit. The route from here is complex with various sink holes, re-entrants and little rocky summits to avoid. Andrew took a very efficient line on the way down - see saved gpx track.
The summit (N35.26979 E24.22988, 1506m, horizontal accuracy 5m) is marked by a damaged cylindrical triangulation pillar with a short wind shelter wall built on - very welcome in the strong cold southerly wind.
We enjoyed a hazy view of the Lefka range (Pachnes) which we had summitted a few days earlier, then headed down. We then drove to Rethymno for a meal then on to the Psiloritis trailhead ready for tomorrow's ascent.
