Ascent Trip Report

While Christmas vacation, a decided to go bag a couple of peaks. The idea was to camp close to Salmon mountain on the 27th and hike that mountain plus mont St-Joseph and mont Victoria in mont Mégantic park. So I drove up to Chartierville last locality before the US border and then turn on chemin brise-culotte. I drove on it till my car start sliding on the new snow that had fallen and the I turn off the engine, that will be my starting point. Lucky I was, I found I little hut to spend the night and there I when with my dog, Web, for the night. It was windy, but not to cold. In the morning a started hiking around 9am. Weather was unsure as it was raining smoothly, not enough to get wet that was the important thing. So I start hiking on the road the hill my car wouldn't had get through the night before. After I pass the summit of the hill, I found the hunter\bush trail I was looking for on my right hand. It's an obvious trail that lead directly to the border a the junction with the Sentier Frontalier. So now on it was an easy hike as this trail is has large as a car. There is a dozen of hunter cache on the way to the border. At the end of this trail there a little bushwalk to do to get on the border but only about 200m, you can almost see the big trench of the border before living the trail. Then on the border's trench it was getting a little harder as there were more snow and that the border isn't cleared of the branches and trees they cut to mark to border. But still, Web leaded me a little while and found at some point that it was just easier to walk in my footprint as the snow was getting thicker. Then after following the border I found the summit right on it. My GPS said summit was at 1030m and at UTM (0332402, 5012245). I did look around that spot to see any higher point but all the slope were getting down from there. On my way back, I knew I still had some time to hike a little more, so I kept the idea to go to mont Mégantic's park and hike mont St-Joseph and mont Victoria.
