Ascent Trip ReportMickle Fell is possibly England's most inaccessible mountain, requiring a permit from the Ministry of Defence to grant access along one of two approved routes. The reward is tranquliity and near wilderness: apart from two foot bridges and a sketchy track, the route is a roller-coaster of ridges, peat groughs and winding, boggy streams, leading to a huge summit block reminiscent of a South African mountain rising out of the veldt. I took the southern route and made slow progress, but still revelled in the space and silence and an unseasonably hot March day.
