Ascent Trip Reporti'd been waiting to get Abe and Ellen for awhile! i enjoyed meeting Oncoman - a hiking speed demon - and was grateful to have him as a companion on what turned out to be a strenuous hike. having not hiked at all for a week, i was out of shape and tired easily. i also made the mistake of bringing kyle's poles, which made the troublesome icy areas on the trail more difficult to navigate. despite lagging behind a bit on the way up to Ellen, i felt pretty good at that summit and was psyched to continue along the ridge. a couple miles later however, i experienced a total energy crash, although i had been sure to get 6 hours of sleep, eat a decent breakfast, and snack hourly on the trail. miles ~5-8 were pretty rough - i know there's trouble when i can't stop yawning. we did a bit of bushwhacking to find our way back to the Long Trail a few times when it seemed to disappear - despite some nasty spruces, Oncoman guided us back pretty quickly every time. by then however, fighting my way through branches (alternating between being tangled with the snowshoes and the poles) sapped my last bit of energy. a roll of smarties helped a bit, but i was relieved to finally reach the summit of Abraham! on the descent, we hit a steep icy patch and we paused to switch from snowshoes to (his) crampons and (my) stabilicers. oncoman took the opportunity to share what is now one of my favorite hiking (misadventure) stories to date, a lesson in why new and used batteries should not be combined in the same device, namely a headlamp. the Battell trail was easy-going, if a little muddy, and i felt a-ok for the remainder of the trip. all in all a challenging hike!
