Ascent Trip ReportLet the 2012 hiking season begin!
Well the winter hasn’t been all that kind as far as the snow is concerned so we put away the xc skis and took out the hiking boots. Lil Yeti (Kaerstin), the Red Goat (Gudi) and I decided to start the season with a hike up Street and Nye mountains. The weather for the day was predicted to be cloudy, slight chance of snow and temps in the low 30’s.
We started at the Adirondak Loj at 10:00am. There was only a few inches of snow on the ground at the Loj, but we put our snowshoes on anyway knowing we will need them later as we got up in elevation.
The terrain from the Loj to the Indian Pass Brook was easy and the snow shoe trail was well packed and easy going. The brook was frozen with lots of snow cover, there were some openings but they were easily avoided. Shortly after the crossing we hit the steep part of the hike. As we approached 3000’ there was quite a bit of snow on the ground and on the trees, which made it look really pretty.
It started to snow along the way and as we got close to the summit of Nye it really started coming down. The final 200 meters to the summit there were several choices of snow shoe trails to follow, we tried to stay on the one that was packed the best.
We reached the summit of Nye at 1:05pm in a strong snow squall and a strong breeze. Since there were no views and with the wind and snow we took the obligatory pictures and headed back down and off to Street.
We met the Red Goat as we were descending and she chose not to continue to the summit but rather take her time heading back down the mountain. Lil-Yeti and I continued on to our second goal of the day, Street Mountain.
The amount of snow in the higher elevations was quite impressive, especially the amount that stuck to the trees, gorgeous and VERY quiet.
We made the summit of Street at 1:50 under cloudy skies and snowing pretty good. There were no views from the summit today but the walk through the snow covered woods was certainly worth it.
For some reason I thought the descent would be much quicker and easier, but since this is our first hike of the season and with snowshoes, we were dragging by the time we reached the Loj at 4:15.
