Ascent Trip ReportAn easy climb sb from I65 ...... 1.1 miles, 35 minutes RT.
I used Ken Oeser's route in his TR of 2001, it is an excellent easy route, unfortunately the rest area east of exit 38 on I65, which he used as the TH, is no longer there.
We drove east on I65 past exit 38 to the crest of the road (abt 1 mile) and parked the van on the wide grass shoulder, straight ahead at 70 yards is a rock wall.
I scrambled up the steep roadside embankment, on the south side of the interstate, where I was able to see the old rest area, now a large grass field. I took/walked a 110 degree Compass Line 200+ yards across the field, stepped over an old fence and at 40 yards (in open woods) came to a grass track. I turned right (south) and followed the track up the ridge (abt .4 miles) to the obvious summit, capped with an old shed (I passed a Hunters shed and a feeding station on the way).
I chose my spot at 15 yards north of the shed at a few rocks, GPS 37.03609, -86.17221. The PB coordinates are in a lower spot.
From here we drove north to the Mammoth Cave National Park, a World Heritage Site, with plenty of time to participate in a Cave Tour. I chose the 2 hour Historic Tour (numerous choices are available) .... 2 miles in length with an elevation change of 300'. The park has well over 300 miles of underground pathways.
We overnighted at the Park's Campground.
