Ascent Trip ReportDriving Rt.49 I noticed many areas where the road had been washed out. Some sections were quite large and still only patched by dirt fill. Impressive damage. Started from Rider Hollow Parking and wore microspikes the entire time. Took the red trail right and looped left to the summit. broke trail from the 1st intersection with the yellow trail all the way to the 4 corners junction. The snow was not deep, probably 6" or so but the top was crusted over from a rain with a freeze overnight. The crust made going rough. The trail to the summit from the 4 corners was well broken from a huge group of 25 Japanese hikers that I met on the summit. After a short break for food and pictures at the viewpoint I descended via the blue trail towards Bellayre, this trail was also not broken, but the going was easier going downhill. The snow was deeper on this side of the mountain and the wind was in my face for much of the descent. Returned to the car via the yellow route which intersected back with the red route I began the climb on. A short bushwhack was necessary to return to the red since Irene had washed out much of the trail and markers. Not a big deal, after crossing the stream the red trail appeared right away.
