Ascent Trip Report

La Tournette 2351m, P1514m

Map: 1:25k: 3431OT

Time: ascent 2h, descent 1:30 (but typical round trip time given as 5h)

Start: from WNW, car park at Chalet d’Aulp, 6km N of Montmin (2km of rough track, OK in normal 2wd car), or park at les Pres Ronds to S

Route: mapped paintmarked track, passing E of Refuge, then S, N, then S to summit.

Difficulties: beyond 2301m, several passages of scrambling, protected by chains etc; 2 ladders on final summit climb. One part of descent was wet following morning rain, slippery and awkward, protected by chain.

Trig point: mapped, but not found at summit

Notes: superb architecture, appears impregnable from all directions. Cross at summit.

Wildlife: Ibex commonly reported: seen on initial ascent, near refuge and just N of summit. Black Redstart near refuge; Alpine Accentor heard higher up. A few other walkers, despite low cloud.

Weather: Heavy rain started just before I got down – path across meadows extremely slippery – keep to grass to stay upright!
