Ascent Trip Report

Pointe d’Arcalod, 2217m, P1717m

Map: 1:25k: 3432OT

Start: from S, Nant Fourchu car park 6km E of Ecole.

Route: good track to Col d’Orgeval, path SW past “dangerous terrain” sign, then steep paintmarked route up slabby E ridge to summit (not always follow polished rock in gaps between paint marks).

Difficulties: E ridge very steep, passages of sustained scrambling, not technical but exposed and a little intimidating.

Trig point: none found, unclear whether one mapped.

Notes: Superb mountain, compact rocky summit, never quite clear of cloud hence views limited; Brocken spectre as compensation. Exciting scrambling on excellent grippy limestone.

Wildlife: Nutcracker heard calling in gorge near start. Edelweiss seen at two points on E ridge – the only sightings in 2 weeks
