Ascent Trip ReportThank goodness for the excellent trip reports by Michael Schwartz (can be found on the County Highpointers site)! In many parts of the country I find that my GPS plus instinct will get me to my parking spot for an ascent with little trouble even if I forgot to bring a trip report or I'm doing a peak that no one on Peakbagger or LOJ has climbed before. In West Virginia that's rarely the case.
I took US 19 S off I-79 to W.Va. 4. At that point my GPS said I was only 6 1/2 mi. away but it would take more than 20 mi. of round about driving to get to the base of the hill. From the intersection of 19 and 4 its 7.3 mi. to the intersection with WVa. 20 in the hamlet of Rock Cave, then 11.2 mi. south to the intersection with Warden Lane (right) a good gravel road (as Mike describes it) at the beginning. But it had been raining, and road quality soon deteriorated with both mud and running water across the road. I was driving a Jeep and had no trouble, but I wouldn't recommend doing it with a passenger car if it's been wet. I parked at the base of the last hill. There is a no trespassing sign there, but no one was around and it was only 10 min. up and down (but steep --210 feet elevation gain in 0.2 mi.).
My GPS reading at the top was 2001 feet, so I suspect that the height is towards the top end of the 1960-2000 foot interval.
