Ascent Trip Report

A surprisingly steep and isolated little peak sitting in the middle of one of the central valleys of the Vosges.

I drove south from the centre of the village of Saales about 1km to the edge of the village, then turned left (east), crossing above the railway line on a narrow bridge. Thereafter I parked since the track onward was very wet and muddy following the recent melt and I was concerned about getting stuck. I continued in the direction of the bridge for a few hundred meters before forking right towards the hill. After about 15 minutes I reached another fork at the base of the hill where I turned left, and soon after the path to the top of the hill was signposted to the right. It led around the mountain to exactly north of the summit, and then rose in steep zigzags to the top. On top of the hill is a large sandstone tor in which steps have been carved to allow easy access to the top. This is small and exposed but enclosed on 3 sides by a slightly incongruous guardrail. The views down the valley are very good although big trees block to the east and north. Underneath the tor is a partially artifical cave, at the time of my visit containing a deep muddy puddle. I followed more or less the same route back but on a parallel track for part of the way.
